Laser cutting is a metal cutting technology which uses a laser beam to cut materials in place of mechanical tooling. Laser cutting works by precisely focusing the output of a high power laser at or slightly below the surface of the material to be cut. The material is then vaporized. Various gases are used to help catalyze and control the process and remove the vaporized material resulting in a fine edge quality with a great speed.
Laser cutting offers many advantages over mechanical cutting. There is no physical contact with the material being processed, so finishes like mirror finish stainless steels are not damaged and unscratched. Laser cutting also offers a more same cut as there is no tooling to wear-out, so the first part of a run will be identical to the last part, and those parts can be recreated to the same specifications at any time with less time consuming and accurate method. The greatest advantage laser cutting offers is versatility. Initial set up costs are minimal because there is no custom tooling to be made in laser cutting.
Prototyping is generally much more economical with laser cutting compared to traditional methods. Adjustments and revisions to your design specifications are a matter of reprogramming, not retooling, and are accommodated quickly and painlessly in laser cutting. This is why laser cutting has replaced approximately 80% of tool and die in the current market.
